Given its relatively small size and having been found near a school, it could be a kids toy. Even if the back appears smooth, go ahead and post a picture of it anyway. If it is a badge or pin of some sort, there should be some indication of that on the back. If all else fails, take it to an antique store to see if they recognize it.
