I got to say it's just a polished river rock. If it was used as you've mentioned, there'd evidence of unnatural wear on it. It's still a pretty slick rock regardless of my opinion.

Agree with Tamrock. Looks like a natural river rock.

The flat metate, and the flatened rubbing stones called "mano's" are very common on the high desert, (or ate least were common, they are harder to find now) and the next
picture I hope gives you an idea what you are looking for when it comes to the mortar and pestels. I hope the picture helps, but it's not like getting to hold them in your hand.

Thank you for your comments and info! It is very appreciated! : ) I just thought maybe it was some kind of artifact because it was the only one of its kind on the bank and both ends are a bit warn looking. Also, maybe you can help me with this....it has a different sound to it when I hit another rock up against it. It's a crisp ring sound unlike most rocks that sound more dulled. I don't know if that could tell me anything about it.
