I'd like to tell you, but will need better pictures in order to do so - and larger images if you can do so.

From what I see, it looks like some that I have, which I too, still need to ID. May I ask, just how thick or thin might this coin be? Do you know how to measure the diameter of coins using millimeters? That would be helpful as well.

I'll bet not too many people have been to the Azores, but I have. I had a fuel stop there in 1965 on my way to Libya for the USAF. Monty

Let's go back to 1955.There was a little white house by itself up on a hill.Yep,it was that type of entertainment! But the best evening was in a pasture on a bluff overlooking the ocean.A resident Portuguese family was having a picnic and invited three of us who happened upon them to join them.Great food, wine, singing, laughter,it was a ball well into the night. Was only there one day and night, but well remembered.

lol Mighty AP, the Azores is a small group of islands in the Atlantic off the coast of Portugal. During WW2 and still it was a major stop for refueling on the way to Germany and other places in Europe.

Well we lived on a hill when we were there. it was called Senorita Hill and it overlooked the flightline. and ive had an experience with the picnics there. it was good, but theres just something not right about drinking boiled pigs blood.

The coins are paper thin? So are the ones that I have.

Most coins that I know of were not made that thin. So that should help us to narrow them down.

I have been meaning to take some pictures of mine and post them in the 'What Is It?' section as well. I guess this is the time to do it.

At least I think I know where I have them, so finding them should not be hard. BTW, I think that at least one of mine has a hole in it. And it seems like one of them had a date which was visible on it.

Since they did not seem to be like other coins that I know of, I had decided that I would keep them and try to ID them. It's late here and I am too tired to do it now, but I will see what I can do about posting pictures of mine here tomorrow (or sometime soon anyway).

Remember, I said that mine look similar. They may not be exactly the same. But their being 'thin' matches the description of mine as well. Thanks.

Yours looks like it has a shield on one side, mine does not.

Also, I did not find mine in the Azores, but purchased it somewhere... probably at a coin show along with several other coins. Something about your coin made me think of mine. I think that yours looked very thin like mine... or somehow, I guessed it. Interesting.

Here are images of one of mine:

What do you think is depicted on the side without the shield?

It is hard to tell from that image. Is or could it be a ship also? Or is it a portrait, such as that of a king or ruler?

What the shield reminds me of is either a French or Spanish coin. And, it looks to be made of copper. Can you see a "shinning sun" image on the side w/o the shield? It looks to be of an older type like the one that I have - maybe of the same period or century.

I have a couple of coin identification books here that deal with coins from before the 1800's, but I am not certain where they are right now. I think that I can find one of them, but the other one I haven't seen around in a while.

Boy, that really looks Spanish to me.

It has what appears to be a shield on one side and a castle on the other. Thanks for supplying another picture of another similar coin, but it is a bit blurry to make out much detail.

I think that there should be some legend or letters on the coin, maybe on both sides. Some coins are too worn to make out all of or even any of the letters, but these coins look like some lettering should still be visible under the right conditions.

Wish I could be more sure, but it looks like a portuguese coin. the shield is similar, but there are Spanish coins that are also similar. This is where I would look first. HH Stan...

Hey Johnnyrebel I have a ? For you my sis is getting married there next year actually tomm. And I was reading on going over there and bringing my detector. But it saying I need to file for a permit, so I was wondering if you did that or how u were able to metal detect there. If you did get permit did you get it online or when you got there and how much it cost. Or any info to be able to MD over there I think it would be a great place to spend some time doing my fav thing. Sp if you could give me any info on getting permission or what I need to do that would be a huge help for me. My sis has a wedding planner over there and I have my sister asking her if she can get my permit where I read it takes a long time to get the permit, but noone actually says the exact time it could take. But I don't want to loose my detector or worse get arrested over there for doing it. And if you did get permit how long is it good for ?? Ir seems like it's for along time or possibly life as to join any metal detector clubs there you need a permit so j cant imagine that its temp If it takes that llong to get if your in a club.. thanks for any info or suggestions to help me

Ah, the Azores spent the night at Lajes Field on the way to Bosnia in 96 and spent 7 hours there coming back from Kuwait in 99.

In 96 we took a taxi and told the driver to take us on a tour. Talk about some beautiful country and the nicest people I've dealt with in a long time. We had a lunch at a total strangers house, though they treated us as family, and refused to take any compensation for their hospitality, hated to leave that is for sure.
