Re: found in an old "abandoned" cemetary all stones dated 1900 and below

Hiya jacquelineur... and welcome! Only 7 posts since signing on is Aug 05? Wow... you should log on more often...

Yea... from the pics, which are kinda almost too small to see, it sure looks like a chunck of leaf spring.

Are cemetaries ever really abandonded? Maybe sometimes forgotten...

Re: montana jim

true and i should change that phrase....it was totally grown over...and looked like it had been 4 years...my brother and I went later to weedeat, mow and chop down what had been forgotten...thats horrible too...its on some property by a friend of mines house between huntsville and waldron...we also found a grave all by itself several miles from there dated 1897 that was interesting of a baby boy born and died same day... gonna send other 3 pics with next post

Re: found in an old "abandoned" cemetary all stones dated 1900 and below

I would be very interested in those cemetery photos...I have old photos of where my relatives were buried in the woods out of Huntsville and even tho "abandoned " ...not forgotten. Somebody ...somewhere will be looking for those gravesites.
I belong to several Find A Grave Groups..where we find lost graves......There are many forums where you can post those pics for people looking for lost relatives including gen-forum under the family names.

Re: found in an old "abandoned" cemetary all stones dated 1900 and below

Another "abandoned" cemetery thread. :( I'm not gonna say another word.

Re: found in an old "abandoned" cemetary all stones dated 1900 and below

Is it stone? Metal? Magnetic? Bigger than the images? Always nice to put a quarter (or some other common U.S. coin) or ruler in an image to give a relative size reference. This thing could be 1" long or 10 feet long. Can't tell.

It's a thinghy that's too small to see of unknown dimensions and composition at this point.

If metal it could be a metal repair strap for a headstone fractured long ago.

Sorry.

NO, I wasn't giving advice, that was the point of my cryptic message. You'd have had to be here a day or two ago to understand my meaning. It wasn't a dig at you.

Re: found in an old "abandoned" cemetary all stones dated 1900 and below

no we weren't cleaning it...we went back later and cleaned it after we discovered it and saw the shape it was in....

Re: found in an old "abandoned" cemetary all stones dated 1900 and below

Re: found in an old "abandoned" cemetary all stones dated 1900 and below

I will have to say many pioneer cemeterys in Scott county Ar. have been totally abandoned for many years, cattle have pushed over the headstones, trees have fallen on the fences, we started last year cleaning & repairing fences on some, the briars & bushes had taken over completely.
I joined the local Historical Society, trying to help make a difference.

Fossis................

When I hear 'abandoned' I think it's had the remains removed. When I hear 'neglected' I think it's been ignored, unkempt, overgrown - but still occupied by the dead. Maybe it's just me. I do think there should be a distinction between the two. Maybe "filled" and "empty" would be more appropriate descriptive terms? Or maybe leave "cemetery" out of the description so that the controversy is avoided? I'm leaving it at that. Bye.

It looks like an adjustable banding strap.

How thick and how wide is it?

Tony

Re: found in an old "abandoned" cemetary all stones dated 1900 and below

I think you could be unto something there Angelo. If the site is quite some ways from a road head stones could have been crated with banding straps. As far as your photos go JaQ, They are fine as the last ones can be enlarged by clicking on the clip and opening. but it's still a tough I.D. If the activity there was before 1900 mostly it would likely be wagon hauled rather than auto truck or tractor. Thanks for Posting.

Hey Jacquelineur welcome. You are doing a fine job keep it up. Don't let any of us big guys scare you off. These are really good pics. You did a fine thing by cleaning that place up. Hope to see more finds from there. Hillbilly Bread<><

Re: found in an old "abandoned" cemetary all stones dated 1900 and below

Wow very intersting can u give me some links I would love to get involved in volunteering to help. Historical Society is that local...I have only been here in Arkansas about a year or so now so I havent quite figured out where everything is yet...It's awful too, how cemetarys are left unattended for so long, we should respect them and take care of them...I would want someone to do it for me...
