I found this in a river in Michigan last summer. It has a hole in the center which seems to be how it was mounted/secured to something. At first I thought it may have been on a hotel room door to show the room number, then as I cleaned it more I saw the smattler sized numbers engraved on it. Could it have been used on a telephone or electric power pole?

What is it 10-23-2009 2-40-11 PM.webp

This item is a numerical tag from the starboard liquid hydrogen tank located on the booster throttle cantistifier of a space shuttle, probably from the Challenger disaster in '85 judging from the evident scorching. The prevailing southwesterly wind on that day would account for the sailing effect necessary to carry this item to MI.
Interestingly enough, on all previous and latter shuttles, the cantistifiers only were numbered to 412. Many pieces from Challenger have been collected and donated to NASA and have been assembled at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Your cantisifier tag is the ONLY missing item from Challenger. One can only marvel at the value it holds.

It's good to know that we have a rocket scientist on board TNet just in case
someone else finds rocket parts. :laughing9: HH, YD

That's a 1943 registration tab that is meant to be attached to the prior year (1942) license plate. It's the forerunner of the registration sticker we put on our plates nowadays. Here's a few pics of them before installation and installed on a 1942 plate. This was ONLY done in 1943 as far as I can tell, probably to save metal for the war effort.

Thanks SgtSki. I thought it was too small for an auto tag, but your ID is right on. Thanks.

Even a broken clock's right twice a day!

What clued me on it was the font of the stamped numbers. I also remembered seeing a plate like that with the tags on it at a flea market at some point in my clouded past.
