Deep in the woods today checking out an old cellar hole. It's full of nails, so I haven't gotten much there since I found it last October. But I took my time today and pulled out something good under all the nails. Rang up in the low 70's and was about 4 inches down. At first I thought it was copper flashing when I pulled it out, but turns out it's half of a powder flask!
Did some research and found one on eBay. It's a Civil war era James Dixon flask. It's toasted and bent, but still a cool find! The patina started flaking off as soon as I got it out of the ground. When I got home, I carefully wiped off the dirt and immediately rubbed some Renaissance Wax on it to stop the flaking.
This is only the second powder flask I've ever found. My first one was in much worse condition. Hopefully, I'll find the back half of this one (and the spout) next time I go there.
