Just wondering if it was in handrolls or in a box?

It was Brinks box :)

Very nice find.

A little background ...."The compulsion of the Second World War led to experiments in coinage where the standard rupee was replaced by the "Quaternary Silver Alloy". The Quaternary Silver coins were issued from 1940. In 1947 these were replaced by pure Nickel coins."

Thus, your 1942 rupee is .500 fine (the "Quaternary Silver Alloy"); as it was .917 fine before 1940....and it weighs 11.66 grams.

Again, kudos.

thurmownator, thank you very much for this important information.

I found that same date, in a Brinks box, and it was my second non-canadian silver, and that was 2 days ago. Weird, huh?

Nice pickup. Those are neat!
