The Button date range is from 1790s-1830s (Rev War or maybe 1812).

Your job to find out why?

Have to disagree with that one, looks much more Spain to me.

Is there a backmark?

Is there a backmark?

Just looked through my buttons, & I think your right.

Same time period? or not?

Yeah I think so, looks like a once piece open back type. I'm guessing there will be no mark, but we'll see.

Exactly what I thought, & slightly domed

Thanks Guys,
The button is rounded but I haven't cleaned the back yet but I can to check for marks. All of the other things that have been found at this site have been from Spanish origin. After I clean it I'll get back with you.

Re: FOUND BY OLD SPANISH MINE!!!!!!! JJ button

Sweet find! Looks like a Mexican Army button 11th regiment for the 1820's - 1840's. I've heard of some of these being dug at Texas Revolution sites. I think there some on display at the Alamo museum.

I know this button well. It is Mexican Army, Alamo period. The JJ is actually a number 11 in the Santa Anna Army. I have found a few in Mexico at camp sites and known areas the Mexican Army was in. The 11th was involved in the Texas Mexican war in 1836. A real nice piece of Texas history you have there. Buttion like this is at the Alamo in San Antonio.

I also have a number 2, 8 and an 11th.

You can read the book History of the War in Texas by Wallace Wooolsey.

If you want to go for a hunt in Mexico drop me a note.

BTW....Fairly certain that thing to the right is a trigger guard from a firearm of some sort.

But you'll be screwed for all the ones that the letter doesn't look like the number! :D

Then again, I recently saw a William III Halfpenny dug in Texas, so I guess anything is possible!
