Probaly 36 caliber for a cap and ball pistol. And I dont know that the square end is for. Hope this helps.

There were also a lot of small caliber "Squirrel Rifles", from .28 to .36 caliber, .32 and .36 being the more popular.. The round indented area just behind where the handles cross was used to cut the sprue off close to the ball. The square end probably was used to tap the rest of the sprue flat against the ball. I'm bringing this old pic of a crude neat little bullet mold I found back up. Does anyone know how old it is, or the manufacturer?

Bigcypress, What you have is a mould for a screw barrel, single shot percussion pistol with barrel wrench. Most of them were 38 to 40 caliber and were loaded by removing the barrel, (which had a square detent at the muzzle, which the wrench fit), placing the charge in the breech and screwing the barrel back on. This item is rare and of some value.

Great news Buck. Thanks. I posted it here twice and I didnt believe it was to tap on the round ball. Its too small and not balanced to use as a hammer. I always thought the end was a tool.

Can you tell me more about it or post a link? Is it English, American or Spanish? What years were they made? Can you find a pic online of the pistol?

Thanks to Buck and now Blacksheep, I may have an ID on my old 2005 bullet mold "What Is It" posting. Blacksheep found this onhttp://www.horsesoldier.com/catalog/c0084.html. It is very close to mine. I would still love to see a picture of the removable breech or barrel pistol that thid bullet mold/tool goes with, if anyone can help.

IRON BULLET MOLD FOR A .38 CALIBER PISTOL FROM THE BEN DEER FARM, GETTYSBURG

This artifact is a battlefield recovered, small-sized, iron bullet mold that appears to be made for a .38 caliber pistol. Found on the Ben Deer Farm in Gettysburg sometime after the fighting, this artifact is complete and in working order. The twin-handled, hinged mold measures 3½" in length and exhibits the head cut for a round ball. Sprue hole and cutter visible. In very good condition, the unmarked tool wears a dark brown patina with scattered patches of old rust. Never cleaned. A fine Gettysburg battlefield artifact from the Ben Deer Farm, this iron bullet mold is identified in John Geiselman's collection by his museum listing.

Yes it does, very cool. It looks older than Civil War era. Is it? Do you have the link, can I read about it? Is it American made?

Dang, I never heard of a gun you had to take the barrel off to load. I guess you really do learn something every day? I'd like to see how that worked. Or more likely why it didn't work since I have been half way round the world and a Dallas County Fair and never seen one. M :D nty

Modern inline muzzleloaders have a wrench that removes the breech for cleaning or unloading... Is the wrench for removing the barrel or the breech? Where exactly does the square end wrench fit? At the muzzle? :icon_scratch:

I have many questions. I am still unsure of the age and make or country of origin of this pistol.

yes on modern the breech plug and nipple comes out to clean the bore and plugs. This sounds like the barrel was removed with the tool. Now this I want to know more on...
