Fireplace poker handle finial would be my guess.

I believe you have a sword pommel, the tang of the sword would protrude through the hole in the top slightly and was peened over. I haven't found an exact match to yours, but here's something similar.View attachment 1316260

IMHO, it appears to be a Flag Pole finial for a Flag Pole carried by a Company or Garrison and has the hole in the top as that is where a Spear was attached to the top of the Flag Pole. If not that, then I would go with creskol's answer of a Poker Handle finial. It just doesn't look right to be a Sword Pommel but I could be wrong!

Huntsman. Any photo examples you can provide. I agree the hole at the top is what makes it interesting.

I can't any examples close to your' piece, so it may not be a Flag Pole Finial. Also, besides Spear Points atop the Finial, some Flag Poles had an Eagle atop the Finial. It is very hard to find pics of an intact Civil War period Flag Pole.
