Am I correct that this is stone?

If like the cliffs near Beverly Beach, which are sediment/sandstone material, I'm thinking a piece of wood or other organic material left a impression after it rotted away.

Yes it's stone, the impression has what looks like bone marrow residue, and is shiny

It's certainly an interesting rock. I would have packed it home also.

I think the impression was left by an animal or more probably a fish vertebra. Any fossils found near the location you found it?
