Found at Modern Miner's site.

Since Modern Miner couldn't make it today and B|lker was out of town, I decided to stop by that site where the three of us found all the bullets, SLQ, belt keeper, etc.

I found this thing today, but neither MM nor I could figure out what it is.

Has anyone seen anything like this, before?

backpack/knapsack snap thing... not a rivet.   Civil war era military equipment.

Where does it snap?

Damn - I removed that post!  LOL  It's used as is... it holds flaps down.  But I did'nt think it was called a "rivet".  Since I can't prove it I removed the post, and have been looking for a good example to show you.

Maybe I'm all wrong.  :P

I DO think it's called a knapsack snap.

I was thinking that it was used similar to a cuff link. ModernMiner did find a knapsack hook not too far from where I found this thing, though.

BRASS KNAPSACK STUD ADJUSTMENT HOOK RECOVERED AT GETTYSBURG BATTLEFIELD

This item was used to adjust lengths of straps on Civil War knapsacks. This style with rivets on each end rather than cast as one unit. This item is not identified in John Geiselman's museum listing but was displayed in mounted showcase number one.

Yup... exactly how it was used.

Re: Found at Modern Miner's site.

I was going to say that it is an awfully smooth looking rivet. I thought it might have been fastened with machinery.

Great ID Jim.

Scroll about halfway down... also identified and sold by Fall Creek Suttlery as a Brass Stud for Sword Belts...

Great job, MJ. I'll probably give it to ModernMiner to add to his collection.

Thanks for your help guys. That was fast.
