I found this back in February while detecting on some private land that sits nearly right on top of Chickamauga Battlefield in NW GA. There were a few minnie balls and iron shrapnel at this site too that were dug. I have yet to be able to identify it, and I even took it to the Chickamauga Civil War Show and Sale they have here every year in Dalton. Nobody there could identify it, and none had seen anything like it, but each seemed to think that it was something either from the War or at least that time period.
It seems to be made up entirely of iron. It almost appears as if it has broken off of something rather than dropped by someone. It measures 21/2 inches in length, 11/8 inch in width, and is 3/4 of an inch tall. Notice the "Z" pattern (as I have been calling it) in the photo which is where it looks as if it may have broken off.
I am open to ANY and ALL ideas! Even if it is just a piece off of some old farm equipment.
Thanks everyone!
