I think it's a reins guide and holder for a horse drawn wagon/cart/buggy...? A guide for each side and a loop-d-loop to wrap the reins in... Just a guess...

Great guess Edlebrock! I've found several of the individual reain guides of this particular shape in fields, but never knew until now exactly how they were mounted. I asume this whole arrangement was encased in leather.

Hey johnnyi, until you said "encased in leather", I assumed it was mounted on the wagon, but looks like it is actually part of the harness itself. Cool find. My grandfather ran draft horses in the early days.

Great ID! You've helped me ID the center piece of this apparatus. I have found a good many terrets (reign guides), but only one of the center brass pieces. Does anyone know what the center piece's purpose was?

Cheers,

Buckles

Will... it looks like there is a strap that runs from the mouth bit back along the neck to the center hook. Possibly there to keep the horse from having to much head... er, to keep the horse from dipping it's head too much.

Called the neck-strap terret.

A neck strap terret! Cool! I only have one of 'em. Finding the whole apparatus is really neat. :coffee2:

Thanks for the help, Jim.
