If it is related to the horse equipment it would be a rossette (sic??) It looks more like a badge or hat pin of some type. Perhaps Civil War but looks to be pre-Civil War?!?!

What is it made of??

Any idea what such a piece is called? I have one that I posted a long while ago--and it never got a convincing ID...

I have heard them called "saddle shields" but all of those seem to have rivets that held them on the leather.

I have also heard them called "sexfoils."

Got a photo?

Horse furniture.

Sexfoil is used to describe a belt decoration or leather decoration which is used on a person.

Do these have a name, or are they just "horse furniture leather thingys"?

They may have a name but I have not seen it in any books etc...

Another popular shape was the 'heart', which I have seen these on actual Victorian horse leathers.

Bump.

These thingys are Harness Bosses.

See reply #12:

The reason the metal spikes on yours are straight is that the piece was lost or discarded before it was ever attached to the harness.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

P.S.--mark this one "Solved"  :)
