Found at 1750's mill.... Button? Colonial? NEED HELP!

Hi, I'm Ted - Nice to meet ya ;DBut anyway, I got out detecting today and had an okay day, I was hunting an old mill in the middle of a local park, and wasn't having much luck I found some old pieces of machinery which I figured came from the mill, a 1920 wheat, souvenier penny, and about an ounce of old silver scrap jewelry. But to get to the point, half way through the day, while I was detecting literally right next to the Mill (which George Washington visited in 1790) I popped out this.... Thing.... I'm praying it's revolutionary, because it would be my oldest find to date, but I have no idea at all, the only mark that I can read on it is a "4" on what I assume is the front. To me it resembles some of the fibulas and broaches that I've seen on British metal detecting sites. Any information at all is appreciated, your guess is as good as mine! It feels like it might be lead, because it's rather heavy. It has a seem on one side of the bar running through the center, I don't know if that's useful, but I figured I'd mention it. If it is revolution-era (Oh gosh, I hope it is!) I would assume it would be some type of clothing fastener (?) I don't even know what it is, so if anyone can help me out based on the images below, please don't hesitate to post. Thanks in advance for all your help, don't be afraid to dissapoint me either, Lord knows it's happened beforeRegards, - Ted

Thanks a lot! That's REALLY helpful! Any idea how old it is? I don't see many people walking around in victorian dresses anymore lol, I'll look up "hem weights" and see what I can find. Thanks again!

I can't find many pictures of hem weights.... The few I can find don't really look like this, but I don't know, they may have looked different at different times.

Are there any other opinions?

its hard to say. i believe these were used well into the teens, maybe longer. seeing how you found it at an old site i would think it is at least as old as when the mill stopped operating.

How longs a piece of string.

The design has changed very little to the present day. Based on the oxidisation its probably 50 years plus & no older than late Victorian.

The depth may give you some indication.
