Hello,

Went to an antique store in town and found some antique marbles. One large gorgeous shooter and a jar of smaller ones, all varying in size. The shooter alone was 25 dollars, but it is really gorgeous. The jar was 7 dollars.

It makes me wonder why antique marbles are so expensive. I'm losing my marbles trying to find out!

Haha, little joke there.

I dont know much about marbles but that shooter is a nice one!!

Just looked on the internet at how to identify vintage marbles. Some of these are hand blown, I can tell by the hole the stick was in when it was blown. It's a tiny hole!

Some of these are also not perfect spheres. Some are slightly egg shaped.

These may be real antiques. Continuing to research.

Nice looking Shooter Marble. They are becoming pricey, because like anything else with age, they just dont make them like that anymore, and there are fewer and fewer of them around. The old "Supply and Demand" principle.

Shooter is a German handmade from Lauscha, Germany. It is the Latticinio type and dates from 1880-1920 or so. It should have a large scar on one or both ends (pontil). The jar is machine-made marbles, American and Japanese, and it looks 1940s to 1960s from here. I don't see any rare ones from the photo you provided, but some of them can be quite pricey as well.

Finding better quality marbles at antique stores is not easy. There is a lot of competition for them. Nice score!

@rhedden, you're seriously telling me that this shooter is from Germany and dates from about 1880 to 1920? That's amazing!

Yes, it does have a large scar on one end. I assume that's the pontil?

@Trezurehunter, It is true, they don't make them like this anymore. Regardless, it's amazing how they made it in the old days. They just don't make them like this anymore.

Awesome I wouldn't know a good marble from bad but your knowledge played off congrats. Tommy

Nice. Rhedden is right on his ID. I actually bought a book on marbles. It gets complicated.

Nice marbles. Did they make peewees back in the old days? I heard they're expensive? I have a small handful of marbles from digs...wish I had more. Always a nice surprise when I find one in the dirt though.

Very cool! Love those marbles. Grew up in Asheville, N.C. In the late 50's we'd play for 'keepsies' at Claxton Elementary school. ..man did I love to play marbles as a kid. Thanks for sharing. Great times remembered.
