Went back to the spot where I found my 1816 LC yesterday. I went really slow and found 8 shotgun shells and one coin. But that one coin is a beauty! It's an 1870 two cent piece! Only my second two center in almost five years of detecting.

As you can see by the photos, it didn't look too promising coming out of the ground. But I let it dry and started chipping at the edge to see what would happen. It flaked off with no effort, so I did the rest of the coin. The obverse was easy, but the reverse was tough. Got most of the crud off eventually, but I'll work on it some more another day.

It's really sharp and has a wild bluish green patina. A bonus is the fact that it had a very low mintage of only 861,250. Definitely the lowest mintage coin I've ever dug.

Here's a few pics. Not the best cleaned up shots, but my house is dark and dreary! I'll try to take some better photos of the coin in bright sunlight tomorrow.

Thats a nice one. The two centers get more rare as the dates get later. Pretty good date there.

Wow, that soil is kind to your coins! Congratulations on a rare find. Can even see the WE easily.

Beautiful coin find, congratulations! :occasion14:

Awsome condition is right . Nice clean up. Congrats !!

Congrats! That is a great coin and in nice shape! Great find. HH

Congrats on digging that gorgeous 2 cent coin FBT. :occasion14: I wish I could find one that was not minted in 1864.

Great find, Tim. You’re absolutely killing it!

Not too bad for being 147 years old.

amazing find. Great cleanup! I’d love to find one of those

Yup, my other one is from 1864. I figured it had to be a '64 or a '65, since they minted so many those two years. When I saw the "7" for the third digit, I got really excited!

This guy is the clean up wizzard. Seriously

I can't take all the credit! The location at the top of a hill and the soil must be a factor as well.

That hill top has been nice to you. Keep scanning that dirt up there mate. Great old coin and a good year too. Well done.:headbang:

Sweet find FreeBird! Most 2-centers that show up are dated 1864- yours is a better date for certain- Congrats!
