Went back to the spot where I found my 1816 LC yesterday. I went really slow and found 8 shotgun shells and one coin. But that one coin is a beauty! It's an 1870 two cent piece! Only my second two center in almost five years of detecting.
As you can see by the photos, it didn't look too promising coming out of the ground. But I let it dry and started chipping at the edge to see what would happen. It flaked off with no effort, so I did the rest of the coin. The obverse was easy, but the reverse was tough. Got most of the crud off eventually, but I'll work on it some more another day.
It's really sharp and has a wild bluish green patina. A bonus is the fact that it had a very low mintage of only 861,250. Definitely the lowest mintage coin I've ever dug.
Here's a few pics. Not the best cleaned up shots, but my house is dark and dreary! I'll try to take some better photos of the coin in bright sunlight tomorrow.
