Found an old button today. Basically the same design as a large cent on it.

What type of button is this? I can't find anything that looks like it...

It's called a pop out repousse coin button. Neat find  Breezie

Is it rare? I haven't been able to find any images online that match this one. Also I realized that the design is not the large cent but rather the Liberty Head Gold dollar 1849-1854

I have a great link for pop out coins but this is not a coin. Nice button.

Yes, but I would date the button to the late 19th C.

I agree with the late 19th century date that crusader gave. This is a style of button I have dug before, with a stamped design and shank without a two-piece back. Sort of like a brief resurgence of the one-piece design well after one-piece buttons fell out of favor. The design on this one is from the $20 gold piece.

Cheers,

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm still very interested in finding out more about this button. Would this have been worn by a civilian or military personnel? Roughly how valuable might it be?
