I recently found this old heavy brass fire hoze nozzle, it has a unique three piece design to adjust the water flow.

it measures 5.5" in tall

it is marked:

ALLEN FIRE DEPT SUPPLY Co , PROV. R.I.

PATd NOV.5.67 & APR.27.69. BY A.F. ALLEN . PROV. R.I.

I tried google, but there is very little info on the ALLEN FIRE DEPT SUPPLY Co ? I dont think they were in business very long?

since the patent dates are 1867 & 1869 would this piece date back to around the late 1860's and 1870's era? Ive never seen one like this before?

Here's a bit of information:

Title:
Automatic fogging nozzle
Document Type and Number:
United States Patent 4358058
Link to this page:

Abstract:
Firefighting apparatus for rapidly dispersing water spray into a super heated atmosphere with as little effort on the part of the fire fighter as possible includes a nozzle providing a whirling fog cone wide angle discharge coaxial with a conventionally supplied narrow angle forward discharge, by means of water pressure spinning of a rotatable section having angled fog heads; control is by handle which can provide for forward discharge, or combination forward and wide angle fog cone discharge, or can shut off all flow; to provide optimum control with smooth flow a transverse cylindrical shape valve body is decentered relative to the bore of the system and has a tapered passage through it; the invention also gives the fire fighter the option of injecting the apparatus into an involved structure without subjecting himself to any more danger than necessary.

Did a Google search under: A F allen nozzles

UPDATE: Here's an illustration with a lot more info. Check all the pages.

Thanks! here's some info about the AF ALLEN spray nozzle:

The Spray Nozzle is a most admirable contrivance by which a pipeman is protected from the heat of a raging fire, so that he can approach close up to it, and direct the stream of water where it will prove most effective. The spray from the nozzle rising in the shape of a cone, places a watery screen between the pipeman and the heat of the fire, while at the same time driving back the smoke, and securing him a supply of fresh air.

**it was designed so a fireman could get closer to the fire**
