Found in backyard. Always found brick like fragments there as a child---rocks we could 'draw' with like chalk, then I found this today....concave on other side of it and green with geometric mountain like lines on other side...and the same orange-y color. I live in Iowa about a mile from the Mississippi river. Our backyard has a fairly steep hill in the back and this was found at the top of it. Probably isn't anything but it is interesting....

Either way---I think it is cool and found in our back yard so even if it is last years Walmart broken pot...well it is ours...but it looks pretty old to me....can't wait for sun to come up and get back out there.....

As for the metal detector...you are correct...only metal. It sounds like your backyard had a house sitting on it some time ago..something fairly modern say in the last couple hundered years since there is so much glass and red brick. The Pottery you have my well be from that time period...some crockery maybe. :dontknow:

Yeah, I quoting myself...sheesh...

Hey on second thought....the stuff you are finding in your backyard could also be from a dump site from in the last hundred or so years. Landfills are a "new" invention and everyone used to just take their junk and dump it out on the back of their property or in a ditch. Do you know the history of the home you are living in? How old is it, what was there before? Was there an old shed that got torn down or a house that was torn down to build the one you are in now? Trying to imagine what the brick would have been from...could have been any structure from a house to a shed to a cellar to a fire pit. :dontknow:

hmm yes I found more old bricks today. I believe it used to be a farm. This and the house next to it are I think some of the oldest in the area. The neighborhood across the street used to be a field. The house next door is an old schoolhouse. There are a few cricks that are right nearby that come from a larger creek west of here. The brick does seem to be dumped on or near the hill, I also found old bottle pieces (blue green glass) and plate fragments. It is interesting. There must have been an old house here. Ours was built in 1900 or so I think and for some reason I always knew there had been another house there. My dad must have told me that long ago but he is gone now. Will look into that more. However there used to be a huge apple tree right near the hill that would have to have been planted after the other house was gone. Unless like you said there had been a shed or something. My family has been here since 1960 and I know my dad would never have dumped stuff back there so it had to have been the family before us but this one piece just seems ancient. I know they found a site in Oakville ia with a lot of artifacts -and I think a dump area like you said (of course with much more ancient stuff like pottery fragments etc). Weird how they would dump stuff so neatly in a hole---I would think they would have just tossed stuff aside but even our ancestors must have been neat freaks! I did also find an old city 'dog tax' dog tag from 1953 back there. I just hope I don't find the dog!
