What is it? Its the larger eagle disk. Its thinner then a coin and looks as though it had a hinge on one side? In the todays finds forum people were thinking buckle? DSC00182.JPG DSC00183.JPG

Looks like part of a tongue and wreath sash buckle

I believe it is the same as ones which have been identified as 1850's commercial market buckles, popular with miners. Most found out west in mining camps, but some have have been found where there was a military presence, although the military did not purchase them for troops to wear.

Thanks for the help. Interesting about the association with the buckle and miners. During the first part of the 1800's the area had seen lots of construction improvements mainly road ways being cut through hills and valleys. Not mining but close enough, moving tons of stone and rock by hand.
