unfortunately it is in BAD shape.........real bad. It is a 1867, do you think there is any hope at all for cleaning it up at all??

found a 44D, and 37 wheat, shotgun shells, an interesting piece that says "Tatters" not sure what it is, it was folded and when I tried to unfold it ripped a bit, some other stuff, not as good as last week. Man I wish that IH was nicer shape, that is my first semi key coin found!

any suggestions for improving the looks of the 1867, I am open to ideas!

The "Tatters" piece is a suspender clip.

And I think you found a VERY old Ram Rod Channel there in that last photo.  Could I see another photo or two of it from different angles--with something for scale perhaps?

Well done.

P.S.--two of those channels are listed at this site for sale for $67, but I think yours is a more attractive piece than either of them--and perhaps older.

One of our Tnet guns gurus might be able to give you an idea of what weapon it came from...

I had a bunch of that verdigris / green corrosion on my 1867. Early this year, I followed someone's advice on using a strong laundry detergent to get that stuff off and pretty much ruined the coin. I'd leave it.

I don't think '67s had any different composition that made them more susceptible to this kind of crud. Good luck to find one despite its presence!

Nice dig on the 1867 G-4. You don't have any better luck on condition that I do  Who cares though...it's got a readable date and you found it

here it is cleaned up best i could............

That's how mine have been being dug lately, just not as old. Good stuff!

Nice finds, the IH came out nice after being cleaned :icon_thumleft:

Congrats on the SK IH!!

What method did you use to clean it?
I used the potato method, baldingboy told me how to do it, there might be a thread about it in the cleaning section here

That's a pretty nice find. I have found that if you dig a IH with a lot of patina on
it and you can read the date, leave it alone. Most people will try to clean it using tap
water, not a good idea. Tap water has salt in it to make it softer. Salt on any old copper
coin is going to make it look like heck, or some other word.

Once you clean a coin like this, even if it looks OK, it will probably turn rusty and then you
can't read it at all. Best leave them alone.

Thanks for showing us your neat find.

Forgot to mention earlier--if you have to straighten thin, stamped brass because it has been bent by the plow, heat it in boiling water--then take it out and bent it back. It is Much less likely to break that way. Bend it a little at a time, and reheat it between bending "sessions."

Again, the IH is nice--but the realy find is the Ramrod Channel. :o

Take care,
