Oyster Perpetual Datejust ladies watch. Two tone stainless and gold. Doesn't run. It was in a box of random settings, unfinished repairs and projects and scrap silver/gold I got from a deceased jewelers daughter. It had a small tag that read HOLD FOR PAYMENT on it.
Looks like the one I found online but...really? A Rolex? Yeah right...

Take the back off and post a pic of the workings. On fakes, all the work goes into the outward appearance, and they cut corners on the inside, using plastic, etc. A good website, www.qualitytyme.net, and click on the 'Rolex or Replica' tab.

A true Rolex will always have a serial number on the back and on the face (glass) about the 6 oclock position there is a crown engraved in the glass but you have to hold it just right in the light to see it as that is one of the ways rolex made them to try to stop the copies.and when running the second hand sweeps real smooth and does not jerk like most cheaper watches. A close friend showed me those things as I thought I had a real one one time and he showed me how to tell it was a fake. wish it had been real.

I am running on it being a copy. LOL like to gave me a heart attack when I looked it up online! It uses a battery so the inside looks electronic but it reads "french movement parts" and "remex electronics ltd hong kong" and "one(1) jewel inadjusted".

The date magnifyer on the face looks about right. hard to tell from one pic. But, rolex's arnt cheap. So, they are never made with cheap metals. In fact, Im pretty sure they dont even use stainless steel. And they will never have plastic on them either. And will never say, made in China, Japan, or any other place.
I got a very rich goddfather. He wears real rolex's. And showed me what to look for. Because I bought a fake one once from a friend for 20 bucks. Just for sh!ts and giggles. And when my dad died, he talked to me about these watches when he was in town. I forgot a lot of what to look for. But, I remember they are heavy. His was gold, had diamonds. And you could tell it was not a cheap. Any pawn shop, or coin and jewelry store should be able to tell you in five seconds if its real or fake.

Only the newer models will have the laser etched emblem at the 6 o'clock position...and the serial number is between the lugs.

Actually many Rolex's are stainless steel, including the Datejust.

To me, the font on this watch is not right. Take the back off and snap a picture of the movement. Rolex all have an in-house automatic movement (self winding) and is very easy to identify.

Hey, just finding it and having it be a possibility is enough to stop YOUR ticker (it sure would mine).

I got "had" on watch that I was sure was not real. I still have it, treated it like crap for 25 years. (hung around in the "finds" can). Three years ago I found out it was real (not a Rolex, though, an antique Omega). I swear, at least 20 people were sure it wasn't real, so, I tossed it in the can.

Happened to be showing some "finds" to a friend of a friend - he was a jeweler and his father had made timepieces for years and years. Darned if he didn't say it was real. I let him bring it to his dad, who certified it was the real deal. His dad said it would take about 150 bucks to fix up to work. (not including the band). Some day I may do that, and leave it to the kids, but, since then, I always advocate having someone taking a look at it (a watch professional). Right now, my watch is still in the finds can. :laughing7:

Absolutely not the case these days.... 'some' fakes are much to good. So good, even the people who know particular brands of high end watches very well need good pictures, and sometimes several, just to give an opinion. I have even seen dealers fooled on occasion so that tells you how good the counterfeits can be. When I bought my watch (definitely not a Rolex) I couldn't tell what was real and fake by looking at the pics and I had the freakin thing right in front of me. Then someone pointed out the two tell-tale signs that made it easy. Usually there are at least a couple things that give away a fake, but they sure can be subtle.

For once it would be nice to see a real Rolex posted.

In the finds can? Wanna sell it?

Sounds like it has a quartz movement from Hong Kong, in which case the second hand would jump from second to second and not operate like a Swiss made ETA automatic movement movement. Not 100% sure but I'm thinking it's a fake, which could explain why the owner didn't pay for the repair and pick it up from the jeweler. Worth checking out, though.

Wow, there is a lot of downright bad information about Rolex watches on this thread. I am currently wearing one that is stainless steel, so there goes that one. It has an acrylic (plastic) crystal, so there goes that one. There is nothing written on the back of it. There is no laser-etched crown insignia. Sheesh, I wonder how many real Rolex watches have been tossed based on such claptrap.

It is difficult to say from just the picture you posted, but it looks like a real, 1998 or later Rolex.

Its worth the trouble to have it inspected in person by Jeweler familiar with Rolex...if its genuine. have it fixed and keep, gift or sell it.

Perhaps you bought a fake.

How did I know that this was going to be a response? And what would you base that on? :laughing7: Here are some pics of a Datejust nearly identical to mine: http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/album/552390719OqicBP Stainless case, nothing on the back, acrylic crystal. I have the Jubilee band in addition to the leather band shown on that watch. It was purchased from an AD, and has been serviced by a different AD. Oh, and it runs slow, just like the two I had before it. ;D
