My first post, so a quick introduction. :)

Just last year I first took interest in the fact that a few civil war skirmishes took place in and near my small Louisiana town. My interest in local history was awakened and next I find out there were local Indians, the Attakapas. Well, one thing lead to another and I'm really starting to take an interest in local history and artifacts of various types and periods. Strange it took 40 years to awaken a passion that I never knew existed in me. I love this website and now visit almost daily for the past 6 months to see the latest finds and find I'm learning a little something too, every visit.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand. I've only been married for little over a year and we honeymooned in Natchez, MS. We love that area and find ourselves making weekend trips almost monthly since then. One thing I have found that I enjoy is creek walking...can't really do that here in south-central Louisiana. No creeks to speak of, just muddy bayous with muddy banks not suitable for walking.

While walking a creek that runs through Natchez, I (actually my 11 year old stepdaughter  ) picked up this interesting looking rock from the mix of rocks on the sandbars. It's definitely rock, very smooth, but not completely spherical, almost has a rounded square feel to it. It may be nothing but an aged and naturally worn rock...but sure looks interesting.

Any opinions?

Thanks.

Cool find and amazing it's still in one piece. I won't say for sure what it is, but I have seen similar items found at known native American archaeological sites. Put a pic on the native American artifacts forum on here; those guys will ID it in a minute. And, now you've got your step-daughter hooked, and she'll probably outdo you every time!

perhaps for grinding pigments. A friend showed me recently some 'mini pots' made of stone (2-3") still with color in them-along with many quartz arrow heads and a stone hatchet, found on his grand fathers farm way out on Eastern Long Island, N.Y. fifty years ago-he said he and his buddies would just dampen the color and smear it on as 'war paint'

Sorry in my opinion it is creek rolled clay but i love the fact that you are walking creeks and teaching your children. Keep up the good work and keep an eye on those rocks....
