I found this in an old churchyard. Its marked sterling, and C&C with the C's being in triangles.
Any idea what the stone is? I know nothing about gems or rings but think it may be glass?

It's hard to tell without seeing it in person, but it looks like a garnet. Hold it up to the light, and focus on the rainbow. A garnet will show patterns with greens and yellows.

Neat find :) Breezie

Thanks Breezie.
I did find some info on the hallmark.
Made by Clark & Coombs. The firm began business in 1872 and used this mark (two Cs in triangles around the ampersand) until 1915.

That's great! Hopefully the stone is the real deal. :) Breezie

Did you hold it up to the light, and focus on the rainbow to see if it shows patterns with greens and yellows? If so, it's a garnet.

Takelababy and austin are both right it is amethyst. I am a retired geologist and I have seen plenty of raw amethyst while working in a Colorado silver mine. Garnet can range in color from red to green to amber to yellow but I have never come across purple. Nice find Gunny!

I'm certainly glad the majority see a purple stone because it looks reddish on my computer monitor. Come to find out, I set my color to 'default' and it looks purple today. Now I know why my daughter said photos of her children's skin didn't look the right color on my computer! LOL Thanks, Breezie
