Found a Remington UMC 16 gauge shotgun shell (1915-1942) today with some paper still in it.

Just an example of how many have and haven't got paper.
Just from a few sorting trays, 125 Headstamps
20% no paper.
Of those no sides left so probably some fell off in cleaning the finds.
There are a couple pin fire shells, have paper still.
What are they dating back to, maybe 150yrs old?

Interesting, I thought it would be rarer to have paper in them but the more you know! Also cool collection👍

Thanks
It's just what I had handy.
I have a box up in the storage with more Headstamps.
I'll get around to making a display one these years.

I keep saying the same thing!! I have such a variety!

I think the paper is called the base wad. It helps hold the shape of the thin, brass base. The powder sits on top of it and the hole in the middle lets the flash of the primer through to ignite the powder.
