Are you asking how to verify there was a hilltop fort there or a structure somewhere in the picture? When researching a site with no above ground sign of structures I look at old maps, atlas, aerial photos, and history books. Depending on what I do/don't find there, it might be worth asking some locals/oldtimers about it. There is more, but that will get you started.
