Had a fun last couple of days, exploring a small abandoned village in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. I have found three sites I had pinned, and while there located three more sites that did not show up in research... Not to mention I have three more possible sites I have yet to explore. The impression I got is these sites have been cherry picked for coins, but... they left a lot..... The site I visited yesterday was a large cellar with large barn right next to it. There is a ton of iron in the ground! Got a nice large chunk of silver spoon, and at the end of the day the button, which rang up like manhole cover.. thought it was going to be trash for sure! These buttons are rare and no one seems to know exactly who used them.... The consensus is most likely a post civil war Mass Militia button. It is big! an 1 1/8" dia with a rusted out iron back. The conservation was a couple of rubs on my sleeve and forehead rub, and a very light dry soft brush just now. HH!

Cool finds. Washington McDonough Root operated as a silversmith between 1823-1884 in a number of partnerships. ‘W.M. Root and Brother’ was the partnership with Laurens M. Root in Pittsfield, MA between 1851-1856.

Neat button! I like the arm with the sword. And the Indian with a bow! That will display nicely. I have to say, you guys in MA come up with some of the best relics.👍🏻

Well found on the button and the silver spoon piece.
It only takes 1 great recovery to make the hunt. Congrats
