me and my brother decided to hit an older school that is kind of in a shady part of town this morning. we hit the sidewalk area around the school without too much to show for it. eric found a 1914 wheatie. then we went inside the playground area. i wasnt to excited about it because it looked like it had been graded recently to me. it was real flat with new trees planted nearby. i thought it would be a waste of time. eric immediatly dug another wheat and proved me wrong! ::) then about 20 minutes later i got this 1944 merc. first silver i have dug in a while. the ground was really dry and hard though making any deep targets real iffy sounding. with the ground as hard as it was, i wasnt real keen on digging to many iffys today. we will have to return after we get a little rain. ill bet some of those iffy signals will sound better then. anyway here is the merc.

tell me about it. ::) the schools are so played out its disgusting. ::) unfortunantly we are having a really hard time finding better sites to hunt around here. the city of wilmington is, how do you say, not detectorist friendly. :'( we havent had much luck with getting permission to do private property either. all we have available to us are the old schools and some old parks that have just been pounded over the years. good finds are few and far between. another thing that sucks about northern delaware is that most of the area is not that old. it was all farmland up here until the 60s when the population boom kicked in. now all of that old farmland is under cement and stripmalls, and the few grassy sections left have mostly all been graded. the city of wilmington would be an awesome place to detect. tons of history.....buuuuut they would rather it all rot in the ground than to let someone have an old dime thats buried within city limits. :'( one of these days our luck will turn and we will find a decent spot to hunt. until then a lowly merc every month or so is probably what i will be digging. thanks everyone for the replies. ;)

Congratulations on a nice find. Heck anytime you want to take a road trip to Illinois, I will let you hunt some fun places. :D

Congrats on the 44' Merc! A 1914 wheat is pretty darn old. Great finds. I wish I had an old school like that around here.

this school was built in 1932 but it isnt very big. it only sits on a lot about the size of a city block. there is also a much larger old school within walking distance of it. im hoping that maybe this school was overlooked a little because of it. you just have to be carefull because its in a real bad neighborhood now. we get there at sun up and are done before most of the thugs are over their hangovers!

What about the beach's Hollow....They should be pickin' up pretty soon,I'll be down at O.C. last week of July if you want to hook up...Until then...Pray for rain,we need it....tired of diggin' through brick myself.Congrat's on the Merc. and your bro.'s Wheatie's.....HH!!
