Up until today, I've only found two leg hold traps in 3 1/2 years of detecting. But I doubled that amount today with two traps in one hole! They were right next to an opening in a stone wall. Must have fallen off a wagon or maybe the trapper's horse. Not a valuable find, but still an interesting part of New England's history.

Not sure how old they are, but probably 1920's or 1930's. I find a lot of 1930's shotgun shells in this area, so that might be a good indicator of when these were lost. I'm not into trapping at all, but they're still a cool find in my book.

Interesting relics from the past.
Congrats!

Neat, I'd throw them in some boiling hot water and see how clean they get. Something unique to hand in the man cave.

Cool find did you try and find name tags in the same are most states have for a long time required name and address on traps most were copper or lead

That's great info! It would be really amazing to find a name tag for them. I'll have to go back and try again.

This spot is full of short pieces of fence wire, so it may be tough to pick up a non-ferrous signal. Guess I'll have to dig all signals and deal with finding lots of fence wire.

I for one am glad you found them and they are worthless. Talk about cruel punishment to animals. When I ever found them land detecting, I was always packing my 45 or 9mm. When I got done with them they were worthless!!

I used to see leg hold traps in the woods when I was a kid. I keep wondering if I'll ever find one metal detecting. You did! Nice finds, congrats and HH

Very nice find a piece of history.Possibly recent history.

Id hate to find one still loaded!!!!!!!

Do me a favor? Set them and place them in front of tom brady's locker?

Very nice relic find, congratulations! :occasion14:

And mostly likely illegal to do when set by a licensed trapper in accordance with their state regulations...

Absolutely true. The ones I found were all illegal and not marked. Never found one in Michigan only in Utah. One I had to get a cat out of while I was a cop. I still think they are very very cruel, even if legal. I can't hurt an animal and make him suffer. BUT I do understand.

I was trapping coon on my property and caught my neighbors cat and let it go. The stupid cat didn't learn the first time. I caught it two more times and let it go. The stupid cat was not injured at all.

Nice relic finds. I have found a number of those, and they do make a great display.

FBT, NOW THAT A VICIOUS FINDS FOR SURE .

Great to see that other diggers appreciate off the wall finds! Always nice to find old coins, but I really like finding stuff like this as well. Ax heads, bells, horseshoes, ox knobs and pocket knives are all awesome finds in my book.
