Can't see all the details clearly, but as BCH just posted, it looks like a U.S. Army eagle general service button, c. 1854 -1902

Looks like your eagle is facing right? Is there a letter on the breast? Can you make out any back mark or name?

Yes, just-geese is right--a letter on the shield will specify area of service, and the backmark will narrow down the date. If you found it near 2-Cent Pieces, I'd be willing to bet its Civil War...but backmark is needed for an ID.

If you haven't scrubbed the back with a toothbrush, take a toothpick and lay it down on the back gently and rub it against the back--as you would a charcoal rubbing of an item on tissue paper--this is a great way to clean backmarks of buttons, because it leaves the patina/dirt in the grooves if the backmark is inset into the back. It allows you to read it clearly. Toothbrush takes all the dirt and verdigris away, and there is no contrast to help in reading it. I clean all my flat buttons this way.

I bought some stock in a toothpick company right before me and BB met. Since we have been digging and he has been finding and cleaning all those buttons my stock has more than doubled!
