Found a buckle next Resaca de la Palma Battlefield

I found this buckle in a small clearing next to the Resaca de la Palma Battlefield. At least I think it is a buckle. It has silver plate on the front and gold plate along the edges. Please tell me what you think could this be a piece of history from May 9, 1846 ?

looks like a lock plate from a school locker to me, the lock cylinder would go in the round hole, and the handle to open it would do in the slot.

I just replied to this in the Todays Finds thread but it sure looks to me like a face plate from an old car radio, or part of a face plate I should say.
