We had a little rain last night, so I headed out early to see if it would give me an edge. I'll say it did! I found my oldest coin ever, a 1773 half real! It was only 4 inches down, but it was on edge. That's probably why I missed it the previous 30 times I hunted this spot!

It's in pretty rough shape, but I'm happy. It's my third half real this year and beat my 1776 by three years. This is only the 3rd silver coin I've found at this spot. The others were a 1953 Rosie and a 1942 war nickel!

The rain is such a HUGE factor right now. It rained here last Saturday and I found an 1803 LC the next morning! That is currently my oldest U.S. coin. This field has slim pickings now, but I'm sure there's still some really old coins hiding there. I'll find them eventually...

Here's a few pics:

Congrats on the great find.

Big Congrats on the Spanish silver. :occasion14:

Nice! Since it's already holed, are you going to wear it? I would for good luck!

sent from a potato...

Congrats on finding your oldest coin!

Hi FBT ! Nice old Spanish silver there !!

That was my first Spanish silver! a 1773 half real! Complete with the wear, dark tarnish, and hole! Nice find

Wow, what a coincidence! I hate finding them with holes, but I guess that was a common practice back then. Still a cool find, though.

With my luck, I'd lose it and it would disappear for another 241 years!

Congrats on the holed Spanish silver. :headbang:

Thanks, guys! It must be a reale week because I see at least two other threads mentioning them! Not a rare find, but I still get a thrill whenever I find one. HH.

Well, a fellow Rhode Islander! I hope your next oldest coin gets you back to 1673. They are out there! Good luck.

Wow, a fellow Rhode Islander with three banner finds! I'm impressed! I'll keep trying for a 17th century coin. I found a 1784 in January, then a 1776 in April and now a 1773 coin. I'm getting there, but it may take me awhile! HH.

WTG on the Colonial Spanish Silver! We sure need a good soaking rain.
