Nice 60 degree day yesterday at a SW Georgia High School that I have hunted numerous times in the last several years. But this day was different - I was hunting around the "practice field", next to the huge football stadium that is always locked, and was hunting along the oval blacktop that has the old "field & track" where locals come out on the weekends to get their exercise and an older man walking on the track saw me detecting with my SIMPLEX+. He asked the usual "are you getting rich?" I said "no - but I believe I just found a quarter", because it was reading a 91 VDI - He watched as I popped out the quarter with a "screwdriver" that I use, and was curious how I knew it would be a quarter - I explained the VDI thing - and then he said I should hunt under the bleachers in the football stadium and the large grass area around the concession stand - I said I would like to but it is always locked. He said "I have the keys to all of the gates" - but did say they were currently unlocked and said that over the last 50 years no one has ever hunted under the bleachers with a metal detector that he knew of - and that I was welcome to search any of that area. I found a few coins under the bleachers but the vast majority was found in the grass areas around the concession stand, as you might expect. Thanks for looking.

The result was $14.13 all clad that included 52-quarters, 10-dimes, 1-nickel & 8-pennies for a total of 71 coins - I got LUCKY & it was a GREAT DAY. Good Luck & HH to all.

Love it Schools are full of targets I like putting all my clad in mason jars and watch them fill great job send some of that weather here to Mi lol. Tommy

Nice job! My brother and I did under the bleachers of a 70s high school a couple years back. It was a gold mine. I found over 40 quarters and two small silver rings in a couple hours. Would’ve found even more but half of it was overgrown by blackberry bushes.

Nice score! While the majority of my detecting involves open fields, every so often I have to have my “clad fix” and hit a public spot in town. Congrats on a great day, made a valuable friend too! Ddf.

wow nice recovery , last time I hunted a school 2 cops showed up within minutes.
and asked me what I thought I was doing. I told them I was metal detecting and they said I was trespassing and to leave NOW. I glad you're able to get in a hunt where you are .

I can't think of a better way to learn a new machine than this. Congrats on a fun and productive day and on making a great contact who may be helpful in the future - especially as he saw firsthand that you could retrieve a coin without destroying the turf.

Thats gettin it. Congratulations :icon_thumright:

DAAAANGG.... around here the cops just cruise by and nod...I guess the might be probably thankful that I’m playing in the dirt and not murdering, robbing, looting, raping etc...the last time a cop stopped where we were detecting, he was simply curious about the hobby and wooed and wowed over our finds. That totally sucks, Ticndig... I guess those officers must have been really bored to make it a point to run you off. Ddf.

Very nice collection of clad, congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Thanks for all the comments & views. And because I like analytics on evaluating my finds by the numbers - It nonetheless diminishes my FUN of discovery & love of this great Hobby - Here are some numbers of this very enjoyable hunt that went from 12:30 to 5 pm (4 1/2 hours):

* Averaged 19.9 cents per coin target dug ($14.13 Ă· 71 = $ .199) almost 20-cents

* Averaged $3.14 per hour ($14.13 Ă· 4 1/2 hours = $3.14)

* 73.2% of coins dug were Quarters (52 Ă· 71 = 0.73239)

* 100% FUN & ENJOYMENT

THANKS for Looking
BILL

P.S. I remember my very first job just out of 2 years business college in 1962 working for Coca-Cola as a bookkeeper I made $75 a week for 40 hours work that was ONLY $1.88 per hour. I did get my first metal detector from White's in 1971, 9 years later.

Like those stats. The average value of dug coins is high due to the minimal number of cents. Do you know if there was something sold there that cost 0.25 or, more likely, returned .25 in change? I agree about under the bleachers - looks like a good spot to hit again.

Hey, Megalodon - I believe that over the last 50 years that this area of the school has exisited, that the food stands around huge grass areas that have evolved over time when a lot of people carried an abundance of clad "quarters" when food & drink items were likely 25 - 50 or 75 cents each and even if a person had a dollar bill - they would get "quarters" back in change - and therefore "seeded" a lot of them in the area dropping them, which is reasonable.

However the "reality" of that hunt was even more simple; - as I turned 78 two weeks ago and digging a lot of pennies & even nickels and getting up & down is limited, so digging too many pennies especially stinking deteriorated "zinc" Lincolns we all hate - AND the fact that there were so many quarters everywhere - that I chose to reject those items with the "notch-out" feature of the Simplex+ and concentrate on mostly "quarters & dimes" to reduce my "up & down" time - Not knowing when I would be able to get back and clean up the rest at a later time, hopefully next weekend. AND when there is that many quarters in the ground of a mostly unsearched area, and "age" is involved - that was "why". I hope that helps to explain - THANKS for asking.......BILL

Hi Bill - Thanks for that excellent explanation. Not only do we now know about the 42 part of your user name, after your initials, but it makes perfect sense. We remember being volunteer "boosters" when our kids played HS sports and IMO, the parent boosters who happily provided all their labor for free (along with much of the supplies) always tried to price things reasonably, so it makes sense that concession items would be priced in 0.25 increments, leading to drops of both spending money and change. You could then, and probably still can, feed a family at a HS sporting event for less than the price of one hot dog at a MLB game.

I'm 13 years younger than you, but I will remember your post as I get older because it is such a good rationale for using discrimination. We are all on that path, and sadly, we see younger folks who are struggling already. It is sinking in that we won't get more flexible or experience less pain from kneeling to dig as we age.

IMO, this is also a good use for the notch feature, not only for the Simplex, but for other machines that have that feature. My old Tesoro Golden Sabre Plus has a good notch filter and I may play with it some more. I use less discrimination because I don't want to miss rings - but hunting a new site like the one you have, I would have wasted a lot of time on pull tabs while you loaded up on quarters and left me in the dust! So, I think your approach to this site is a good one. Once you exhaust those easy signals, you could always go back for the lower signals if you want, with good knee pads or a garden kneeling pad.

I'm really hoping to read a post from you some day about finding a setting at which you find a good ring with the Simplex while notching out those pesky zincoln cents. I look forward to seeing the finds from your next visit to this site - hopefully soon.

Best wishes, RPM55

Hey Bill...While the hunt posted here is no less than eye popping, I can’t help but notice the number in your avatar area...200,000! I want to mention this to draw attention to it for the newer users out there and the potential detectorist who may be thinking the game is all but played out. This game is nowhere NEAR played out, there are so many coins in the ground waiting to be dug up the numbers are just about incalculable. Your total is a HUGE number, and it’s great to see you’re still after it. Being as you’ve been at it for 48 years, I don’t imagine that you’re a young man, but clearly one who doesn’t give up easily! Nice work being able to make it pay out AGAIN!

I just realized there are old coins with mintages far lower than Bill's number of finds.
