Found 1859 Indian head. First year of the indian head penny "I Think".

I found a 1859 Indian head. Do to the reverse design I guess this was only the first year that had the bow on the bottom and no shield on top from what I understand.

I believe you are correct DFX, 1859 was the first year for the IH penny and was the only year that didn't have the shield on the reverse. Nice find though, in that you have the first year of issuance.
 

Nice! The detail still looks pretty sharp under all the buildup. may have been an early drop. Now the question, to clean or not to clean.....
 

Yep , that's the first year - Nice ! Now I'm wondering if you can safely clean that with a tooth pic and/or a soft bristle brush ?
 

It is the first issue, very cool find. Over 36 million were minted so it doesn't have much value in the condition it's in. I'm sure your going to keep it so cleaning it up might allow you to enjoy the coin a little more and won't have any effect on value.
 

Nice "fatty" indian head. Never found an 1859... still looking for that one myself.
 

Yes I decided to clean it as it had no real value. I used warm water and a old tooth brush.
