Hello, I'm having trouble getting a picture of this coin...hope to get it on soon. I found it this past weekend in a farm field here in CT. It is a 1821 Spanish 1 Reale. It has a "Z" mint mark, with AG Assayer initials. The Z mint mark was puzzling, but then I read that it stood for Zacatecas in Mexico, this is where these coins were minted during Mexico's war for independance. Does anyone have any idea as to the rarity of the coin? I also found a 1807 over 6 Large Cent. Quite a day. Thanks.

Upload the pics on photobucket.com and then paste the "IMG" code on here. That should work.

Many years ago, when Grove wrote the 'bible' on Mexican coins he gave your coin (1821-1R-Z-AG) a value of between $10 (VG) and $25 (EF). No mintage is stated. There are differences in the dies (head touching or not touching rim, right column long or short) and these may effect current values. The coin was the 'common' coin of the day; nevertheless, its a valuable piece of history and a great find.

BDD...Kirk, here is the IMG code you mentioned from Photobucket. Could you tell me where I would put this code? Thanks.

Awesome finds, congrats! You might try using the macro feature of the camera, will help the fuzzy picture, it is the tulip/flower button on the camera. I also use Irfanview to process pics and resizing. HH, Mike

Hey Clutch, where in CT are you?
