i went back to the church grove where last week i found the musketball and hit it hard. i nearly passed out when at 2 inches out came a silver coin dated 1781!! i wish i had a scanner or a camera because i need serious help in identifieng it and i know there are several of you who will know exactly what it is. all i can do is describe it........its about the size of a dime ( a little smaller) on the front is a portrait of who i assume is the king of england. the date 1781 is directly below that.reading from the left of the date it reads CAROLUS-III-DEI-GRATIA- on the back it has the crown at the top, and under it is a family crest flanked by what looks like horns on either side.from the top right on around it reads -HISPAN-ET-IND-R-M-F-F . and as i said it is silver. i also found a copper coin which i assume to be colonial as well! but it is so corroded and damaged i can only make out the word LONDON on it.it is wafer thin and is slightly larger than a modern penny. any help in identifying these coins would be awesome. i will work on getting pictures put up as soon as i can find someone with a camera and a scanner........i also dug .17 cents in clad and a whole lot of pulltabs!! i cant wait to get a better machine to hit this spot with. if i can find stuff like this with the ace 250 there has got to be deeper targets that i just cant reach at the moment. thanks for looking!! ;D

You Gotta Get a Camera, I'd Enjoy Seeing a Pic.

CONGRATS !

Sounds like a Spanish real to me......very cool find. They were legal tender in the US until 1857, along with other foreign coins.

My friend found a 1799 Spanish Reale, it's the size of a half dollar. You can see a picture of it on the colonial fort site in Missouri post.

There are different denominations in those spanish coins....the larger one your buddy found is probably a 4 reales. The largest, the 8 reales (pieces of eight in pirate lore) were roughly equivalent to the silver dollar in terms of size.

They all feature the same devices.

Great finds !! ...Sounds like you really enjoy the hobby and are having fun and thats what its all about. I'd guess the Silver to be a "half or 1 Reale" Spanish, and sounds like the copper could be a Half Penny.
Nice Dig !!

i was just off doing some research and i come back and low and behold........pbk hit it right on the head!! its a 1781 spanish half reale!! thanks to whites 6000 as well for pointing me in the right direction!! you guys are awesome when it comes to this stuff! you know what the next question is ..........whats it worth? ::)

:o RED!!! :o

Oh my goodness!!!! What a day you had!!!!!!!!

Congratulations!!!!

You got to get a camera!!!!

;)

25 bucks...........well it looks like im goin to work on monday!!! :Dlol :D. thats ok..the thrill i got finding it was worth way more than 25 bucks!!

jake,i found another old coin or something as well but i cant id it. its too far gone. it was mentioned that it may have been a half penny but i dont think so. the only word legible on the thing is the word "london" and none of the pictures i could find of a half penny said london on them. maybe it isnt a coin at all and is a token or a piece of a button. i guess i may never know. .........i also found 17 cents in clad and a million pulltabs!!

nana, i know! i really do need to join the rest of the world and get a camera!! to be honest i have never owned one! :'(

Great digs, WTG!!!
You can use a cheap web cam to take your pictures also,, that's what I do. I just hold a magnifying glass in front of the lens for close ups...
Good luck & Happy hunting~

Now that sounds like quite a find. Wish I could find a grove like that. You're forcing me to look harder, but I don't mind. HH

If I found that coin, its value would increase by 999,975.01
Cause it would be worth a million to me. WTG!! HH

thanks guys! i was totaly flippin` out when i found it!! i had to sit down for a minute!! lol . ironicly, i did not find any silver coins from the 60s which is what i was after, seeing that this grove was popular then.all of the older finds were found in the very back of the grove at the tree line where it turns into thick woods. this winter, after the thicket dies away,im going to try to search the woods themselves.i get the feeling that there was something there long ago. my mother also told me that when she was a little girl, they used to hold dinners and church functions in the field in front of the church.today it looks like a very unlikely place to do something like that, so maybe it has never been searched. i will need to get permission first though. i am not comfortable hunting that close to the church building and in plain sight without permission.anyway.........thanks to everyone for the help and the kind words!!

I can see why that coin is only worth 25 bucks. That is one UG...LEE king on the front. I better hush, that might be the queen. I would faint if I found a coin that old down here! Good luck and hope you find more!
