This was found in a Native American Indian camp in Northwest, Wyoming. I am not sure Native Americans ever worked with metals, and have never seen anything quite like it. Seems real crude, and rough. Any opinions are more than welcome.
I don't think any native Americans ever worked with metal outside of the native copper found in the upper Michigan peninsula. It's a metal washer from what I see. It does look crude as you mention. It could have been used in a number of ways. Maybe an old fur trapper used it to chain his traps? This item I don't think we'll ever really know who and when they made it and what it was originally meant to do. Still I don't really know what type of metal it is.
It looks to me like there may be markings on it, which more photos might help us decipher. I'm looking at the are from the bottom around the left side, which is partially blocked. Your pictures do give a good sense of the thickness, so that helps to have seen too.
It was found with arrowheads, and other Native American artifacts. It was the only metal object found on site. I believe that it was in possession of the Native Americans because of all the other artifacts that were around the site. I am sure it came from elsewhere, but was with all the other artifacts. I will try to get some more photos posted after work today.
