My brother is a commercial lobsterman and brought this up in one of his traps a few miles off Cape Ann, Mass. I think it's the fossilized tooth of a whale -- but just the "cap." Any ideas? The knife for scale is about 7" overall.

By fossilized I assume you mean it's now stone.
And I mean no offence but just going by the pic it could the burnt end of a stick :dontknow:
That's the kind of item that would have to be examined in person by an expert, be it a marine biologist, a paliontologist, or otherwise.

Thank you, it's a very interesting object. I hope you can solve the mystery and share it with us.

It's definitely not wood. He said it has a surface like a finger nail. So maybe not fossilized, or a tooth.

It definitely looks like a tooth to me too. I have a section of a Mosasaur jaw with some teeth that look similar. Do a google search for Mosasaur teeth and you might find something that looks just like that from a different section of Jaw.

I have a whale tooth -- this seems much larger, though I've only seen the photos. He's supposed to bring it to me tomorrow so I can take a look at it in person.

Could be the enamel from a large killer whale?

That was my initial impression -- I still haven't seen it in person. The color could be from the muddy bottom.
