I don’t believe it’s a clam or a fossil , looks like a pretty layered sedimentary rock, but I’m not a geologist either

I have not a clue. But a cool find. Congrats!

I think it's a shell fragment. If it was a sedimentary rock, the back side would show the layers also. It may be a fossil, but probably not from your area. It may have been hauled in, in a load of limestone or gravel from elsewhere. The ancient marine exposures in your area are mainly ordovician in age (ended 438 mil. years ago ) and predate that clam.

Clam, but don’t think it’s that old

Hi

The Champlain Sea covered this area 7000 to 10000 years ago. How old do you think this might be?

All right, then. Learn something here every day. I had referred to a geologic map of your area for my previous reply. I had never read of the Champlain Sea, a temporary 3,000 year long influx of the sea in your area, after the retreat of the glaciers. Your shell could very well be from that period, don't you think?

It is just so colorful on top to be so old. How can I confirm if this is a fossil.

I suspect so but was looking for confirmation...

Thanks!:)
