Fossil Sponge

We went fossil hunting last week on the West side of the San Joaquin Valley in California & I found a nice sponge specimen. This sponge has about 6 segments or branches. You can see the hollow round areas in the center of the branches filled with sediment and a nice clear view of the wall structure of each branch. I always find bits of sponges there but this one is the nicest "grouping" so far. It's big too, about 4 1/2" tall and about 6" across. When I found it we were getting ready to leave for the day & I tripped on it going back to the car. ;D

I'm sorry about those big photos. I thought I had gotten them down to the right size but I guess not.
