Greetings daniel,

Fossil or pottery what? Perhaps a bit more information as to size, context in which found, heft, etc. might be helpful. It looks different in each up, down & sideways photo.

I initially wondered what kind of cheese it might be…

Looks like hardened drywall mud dumped out of a bucket.
The third pic looks like ring shape from bucket bottom.
What is the diameter?

If it is bucket size, I would say you are right. Iv'e seen stuff like that around job sites.

it is 6 inches wide and 3 inches tall. Found near a large lake. probably 8 miles from nearest home & approximately 2oo yards from the shoreline in a large wooded area (central Indiana) Personally after a few emails from some college buddies i believe it is a Chert concretion. You can definatley see the different layers of mineralization on the bottom, including a few rusty iron layers.

images.jpeg Looks like a pattern similar to this on the bottom.?
6" would probably be about the size of a 1lb coffee can.

there are natural stones that come out of our shale here in the Finger Lakes that resemble this- you probably have them in your sandstone in IN also. While hiking a gorge one day I picked up a 'double bubble' like two bowling balls making 'pebbles'---
