James Bennett was a young easterner who served as a United States Army dragoon sergeant in New Mexico during the 1850's. This is his diary, "an unvarnished account of a country struggling to conquer the land and to establish the faint outlines of order." Bennett's diary tells of Indian fighting, and hardships. He knew Kit Carson. "Bennett joined the 1st Dragoons in 1849 and describes his first trip over the Santa Fe Trail that year to Las Vegas."
