I went over to a park in the afternoon - around 3 or 3:30...
Looked at the dirt piles that had been pulled from the ball field and decided to check out the woods first. I read the big sign about erosion and glaciers and be gentle on the land blah blah blah and then went in off the trails.
My first set down of the coil was right on top of a gold ring - a kids ring with 3 tiny stones of dubious value but the band looks to be real gold - not plated. No markings inside it though. About 3 inches down. Correction: On further inspection, it's probably plated
Speaking of hairy digs, I spotted a black plastic garbage bag and went over to check it out.
There were a few holes in the bag and I could see hair or fur - so my guess is someone tossed their dead cat or small dog.
People are such a**holes. Hopefully it was dead before they bagged it and tossed it into the woods.
Wandered around through the spider webs for awhile, fed some mosquitoes, dug up a lot of canned food tin lids, saw bottle remains in several places and dug mostly junk. Got the part of a pocket watch that holds the glass crystal, but no glass and no watch.
Headed back up towards the top of the gulley and on the way towards the fence got a nice toy derringer that fooled me into thinking it was real until I got it home and washed it off. Everything is intact - handle grips, spring on the firing pin, it still works. No rust. But it's not a real derringer. Made in USA. I think the brand is Nichols
Took a few swings on the above mentioned dirt piles and didn't get anything so I worked along the woodchips and fence.
Got 6 clad dimes here and there. About 5 mem cents.
I got really excited when I found my first token with two slots in the back side.
About 8 inches down.
Now for sure I was thinking I would find silver if this was one of those old phone tokens.
A couple minutes and 6 feet farther down the wood chip road later, another token with slots. Wow - this is getting promising (I thinks to myself)
I'm sure I'm gonna hit into some silver now...
About 3 more feet away from the last one, I get the THIRD token. Holy crap I thinks.
I keep searching here and there but no more tokens.
All the great sounding signals I got after the tokens turned out to be flattened screw caps. And I mean flattened. 8 inches down.
OK so I call it a day - it was now about 7pm and I was content with the derringer and the tokens and the ring.
Until I got home and washed off the tokens. Sonsab**ches they're Brunswick Zone tokens!!!
Well that explains why there was no silver nearby anyways.
It was good to get out and dig again anyways. Hopefully my next token will be a genuine relic.
