Forged nails have been around since biblical times... and the cut nail came around in the mid 1700s but didn't dominate the market place until about 1850.

I think the best way to date your nail is to determine the "age" of the "area"... what else is going on there? If it's cut it can be considered to 1800 - 1900... after that the "wire" nail became the way to go.

I wrote all that then found this - a MUCH better source of information because they have cool pictures... :)

found this 4 1/4 " nail today , I cannot decide if it is forged or cut,the head was pounded flat,or butterflied.
site is a 1700's homesite, there are lots of old bricks, larger than todays.

Hi Jr, this a forged hand made nail. They have been made since the Roman time (2000 years ago) and maybe even earlier. I have found many around Roman forts and villa's high on the mountains of Serbia, where no one has lived or farmed since the Roman time. This is just the way they made them. Romans had also some round nails also, I guess made from a rod or something like that. If you want to see some of those that I found I can post a few here. Let me know.

I agree with Woody. I usually look for that "Rose" head that is on a forged nail. It's a dead give away. So it seems we have hit the nail on the head on this one.
