This looks like a end of a windmill rod. There is one on each end of a wooden rod about 10 or 15 feet long and they enable you to splice the pump rods to the depth of the water table. One end of the rod has the female end and the other end is male. As a kid, living on the farm, I helped "pull the well" to put new leathers on the end of the pump rod more than once.

I think Gary is on the right track. If you live near oil fields the same type rods were used in oil wells. They were a little larger in diameter than the windmill rods and were called "sucker rods". Tony

Thanks for that, I knew they looked familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on where I've seen them. Then it hit me after reading your post, I live in a HUGE oil area (Northern PA.)

I imagined lots of other things, but I would have never guessed that.
I never even heard of a windmill/sucker rod.
