I pulled this coin out of a nickel roll the other day when I was crhing. It's got an edge like a silver quarter or dime, the size of a nickel, hole in the middle, etc. Any information on it?

The number "53" can mislead many; here's the explanation: The number represents the year of the minting BUT
the year of minting uses a Japanese era calendar scheme. The four eras since the introduction of the Japanese yen are the Meiji (from 1868 - 1912), the Taisho (from 1912 - 1926), the Showa (from 1926 - 1989) and the Heisei (from 1989 - present). The year shown on the coin is the year number within a particular era. For example, this 50 yen coin was minted in the year 53 of the Showa era (it can't be from any other era). The coin was therefore minted in the year 1926 PLUS 53; or 1979.

Mackaydon is right, and chalk full of info as usual, but not right on.
I believe Showa 53 is actually 1978.
If you ever come across a 50 yen piece of showa 62 (1987) you hit the mini lottery. Although a recent mint, big time key date. $120 I believe.
