For the silver experts

Was wondering if anyone knew how much silver would have to go up to in order for silver plate to become valuable as scrap? I buy it when I find it dirt cheap just because I like the look of it. And whatever the price has to get to to be valuable do you think it will ever get there. Thanks,

Dblski, silver plate will never be valuable. The silver plating might be only .002" (two thousandth of an inch) thick. On a 1 lb pitcher, you might have $1 in silver value. AND, how would a refiner strip the silver? It would cost too much to do it.

midwest refineries buys plated silver don't know the going price for it but they buy it by the pound....

I look for cheap plate over brass and even better copper, both for scrap. Never could find a concrete answer about the plated alloy.

Figured i'd chime in on this. As far as "for scrap" goes, your question has been answered. However there are exceptions when it comes to certain silverplated items for resale. Pieces made by a particular company or artisan such as the Art Deco pieces made by Jean Despres or Christofle or the 'Perfect Hard Silver plating' pieces patented and made by WMF (Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik), or the older 18th early 19th century pieces like old Sheffield plate for example. Always be on the lookout for certain silverplated items, many are overlooked because they are only "silverplated".
