I'm young only 25 and I can tell you 1st that I'm no expert! I've been hunting artifacts for about 15 years now, and I have learned more about them in the past 4 months up here than I have my entire life!
If you find something and not sure about it post it! That's what this forum is for. And respect the opinions of the more learned people up here! There are some guys here that really know their stuff! To name a few: GrimReaper, Larson1951, GatorBoy, Sohio (haven't seen him in awhile) and many more! I'm sure they will be the 1st to tell you they don't know anything and are very respectful and humble about helping us new guys out!
I guess all I'm trying to say is post your stuff and see what you can learn! Everyone is super friendly and means no harm in cracking a good joke! Keep hunting and maybe one day you will dig up that whole TeePee! Good luck guys and thanks!

How long have you been hunting artifacts?

I'm assuming by reading some posts on here that the laws in the south are very different from the laws in South Dakota. Here you can't touch any Native American artifacts unless you are Native American. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me why that is? You all have great stuff by the way!

It all falls under federal law it depend upon how much they want to enforce it. The ARPA act of 1979 Archeological [FONT=arial, sans-serif]resources protection act is for Federal land. Jimmy Carter re wrote it saying you could pick up arrowheads but no digging. Now they try to exercise the act with you can not remove it from Federal land. Most government agencys have better things to do than chase a surface hunter but if you dig it is your ass. You may do what ever you like with permission on private land unless it involves burials then it falls under the grave protection act.... Then there are the designated archeological sites that you had better not even stop at.
So in reality the south is no different than anywhere else as it is all under Federal law the one difference in the south might be that there is much more private land and creeks and a lot of creeks are not considered navigable water ways. Hunt with permission and know the law. I do not know why they would let Native Americans touch artifacts and no one else as that would be discrimination. Hope this helps.

Thanks, they def. enforce it around here...and we live right next to the reservation-i guess the discrimination doesnt apply because it diesnt belong to us-my cousin is native so i can give him what i see. My grandfather used to artifact and had some great finds i think his heart has broken since the laws changed-thank you fir ur response plz excyse mistakes on my phine and SO SICK OF CIRRECTING MYSELF LOL

where in south dakota about are you from
i was born and raised for the most part on a farm in south dakota
what res are you talking about?

I am new here and the knowledge level of the people active here is clear. And I feel I know what I see, but the passion and expertise here is clear. Good forums are like that. They attract real people who do not have personal cliques who feel that only the experts should talk or ask questions. I publish a fishing magazine, and our forums are healthy like this one. If is a beautiful thing to see and participate in. But it requires good moderation. Like I said, I am new to these forums too. My collection was pretty much my little toy secret. I just found out I am gonna be a granddad, and started building the collection over the past year. That is what brought me here and I am very happy to have joined and been accepted :)
